What's new?

Celebrating National Ergonomics Month (NEM)!

October is National Ergonomics Month (NEM), a time to raise awareness about the importance of ergonomics in creating healthy, comfortable, and productive workplaces. NEM is all about spreading the word on how ergonomic practices can improve well-being and reduce the risk of work-related injuries.

Throughout the month, workplaces around the world focus on implementing ergonomic solutions to reduce strain and improve efficiency. It’s the perfect time to take a closer look at your own workspace and make adjustments that can lead to long-term health benefits.

Ergonomics by Erin Tip: Use this month as an opportunity to evaluate your current setup. Do you have ergonomic concerns? Consider scheduling a professional assessment to ensure you’re working in the most optimal environment.

Ergonomics and AI: How Artificial Intelligence is Shaping Workplace Ergonomics

Artificial intelligence (AI) has started revolutionizing ergonomic assessments in workplaces. AI-based software is now being used to evaluate posture, movements, and repetitive strain risks in real time. Some of the latest AI-driven tools can analyze video footage of workers at their stations and provide instant ergonomic feedback on their posture and task execution.

This can significantly reduce the risk of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) by enabling more timely and personalized adjustments. Ergonomic specialists and employers are increasingly using these advanced systems to promote health and productivity in the workplace.

What This Means for You: AI tools could soon make assessments quicker and more efficient, offering valuable insights into your workstation setup in a matter of seconds.

Sit-Stand Desks Still Trending: New Studies on Productivity Benefits

The sit-stand desk has been a major trend in ergonomics over the past decade, and the momentum continues. Recent research published in Ergonomics Today shows that alternating between sitting and standing during the workday can boost productivity by up to 15%. This is because standing promotes increased circulation, higher energy levels, and reduces fatigue, all of which contribute to greater focus and fewer work-related injuries.

However, experts stress the importance of balanced usage—standing too much without proper posture can lead to strain as well. The key takeaway? Find the right mix for your body, and don’t forget to move frequently.

Tips from Erin: Simple Adjustments for Better Workflows

  • Keyboard Placement: Your keyboard should be placed slightly below elbow level, with your forearms parallel to the floor. This can minimize strain on your wrists and shoulders.
  • Screen Positioning: Make sure your screen is at eye level, about 20-30 inches away from your eyes, to reduce neck and eye strain.
  • Take Frequent Breaks: Every 30 minutes, get up, move, and stretch. It’s vital for circulation and maintaining energy levels throughout the day.
